Flying Shuttle - Invented in 1733 - Invented by John Kay - This device enabled one weaver to make a width of cloth it had previously taken two to make. It would take 27 years before the use of the flying shuttle became widespread but once it did, the looms now wove the cloth so fast that the spinners could not keep up with the demand for thread.
Spinning Jenny - Invented in 1764 - Patented by James Hargreaves - The idea was by Thomas Highs (Hayes) The Spinning Jenny was a small machine and cheap to construct, both these factors were important if it was going to be used in the domestic system, i.e. the cottage industry.
Steam Engine - Invented in 1712 - Invented by Thomas Newcomen - The Newcomen engine was used to pump water out of mines. Steam power really took off with improvements made by James Watt in 1778. The Watt steam engine improved the efficiency of steam engines considerably. His engines could be smaller and use less coal. By the early 1800s, Watt steam engines were used in factories throughout England.
Water Frame - Invented in 1732 - Invented by Richard Arkwright - The water frame was a very important invention. Some people believe it was one of, if not the most important invention of its time. It was a machine that could mechanically spin thread. It was the first spinning machine that was water-powered and automatic.
Tin Can - Created by Philippe de Girard (uncredited inventor) - Idea passed to Peter Durand - Officially used in 1820 for gunpowder, seeds and turpentine - The reason why food canning was invented was because there was the need for food items that were easily rotten and has a short expiry date than others. There was a need to develop a food storage system that will make all foods be able to be transported and traded without expiring.

Robert Owen - Welsh social reformer who attempted to build a utopian socialist and co-operative movement. Owen sought to consider the welfare of his workers, something usually overlooked in the industrial revolution. - 1771-1858
