Nya's first walk to water.Salva's school is under attacked while learning Arabic and making clay models of cows.Salva lives in Rochester.Salva's group is also making boats to cross the Nile.Salva joins a group of people after running away from his school.Salva sees Marial get killed.Many thorns are on the way to her path towards water.Chapter 3 eventSalva's best friend gets eaten by a lion and he is very sad because they were close.Salva meets an old lady who gives him food and water and then later tells him to leave.Nya comes home to empty the water. She has to go get water for a second time. Akeer comes along to learn. Nya takes this trip twice a day everyday.Akeer gets very sick. The elderly and young children usually die from it. Nya's family has no idea what to do because the nearest clinic is a few days away taking walking into consideration.Visitors arrive to speak to the villages chief in a Jeep.Visitors come to Nya's village with a huge drill designed to build a well. But Nya doesn't understand why they came.Now that Jewiir is dead, Salva has no choice but to beg for food. The other people in the group sometimes give him food, but always begrudgingly.Salva is nearly seventeen years old now. He’s learned from the camp’s workers that Ethiopia’s government is on the verge of collapse.Nya’s village is still busy trying to draw water up from beneath the ground. The drilling crew has been moving very slowly.In Ethiopia in 1991, the refugees rush to the river. Soldiers force some of the refugees to jump into the water, wanting to push them out of the country. Salva sees a crocodile attacking one man who’s jumped in the water. The soldiers begin shouting and firing their weapons. Salva jumps in the water. After what feels like hours, he finds that he’s paddled to the other side of the river. Later, Salva will learn that more than a thousand people died trying to cross the river.After three full days of drilling, the workers locate water beneath the ground. The entire village cheers. However, Nya notices that the water is muddy.Although the water is brown and murky, some of the younger children try to drink it right away. Nya’s older brother, Dep, explains that the water is muddy because the men need to drill deeper, down to where the water runs clear.
