Cross-party political talks began in 1996. Bill Clinton, USA president at the time took an active role, appointing senator George Mitchell as chair of the talks process.
Good Friday Agreement
Peace deal that brought an end to the troubles. Multi-party agreement by most Northern Ireland's political parties. International agreement between the British and Irish governments.
50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE TROUBLES
Omagh Bombing
Car bomb attack in the town of Omagh. Orchestrated by a splinter group who opposed the IRA's ceasefire. The attack killed 29 people.
