Abacus (2700-2300 B.C.) The Abacus was an early calculating tool. It worked by shifting balls along a pole of metal.

Pascaline (1645) The pascaline is a mechanical calculator. The calculater featured mechanical wheels with spokes labeled 0-9. To input a number, the user would place a stylus in the corresponding place between the spokes.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (July 1, 1646 - Nov 14, 1716 Lived in the Holy Roman Empire.
Leibniz Machine (1671) Was a mechanical machine that represented numbers in decimal form. Did multiplication by repeated addition and shifting.
Binary Code (1679) Uses a two-symbol system, like 0 & 1, to represent numbers and letters. Assigns a pattern of binary digits (bits) to each character.

Boolean Algebra (1847) First seen in George Boole's book, "The Mathematical Analysis of Logic," it a branch of algebra In which the values of the variables are the truth values true and false, usually denoted 1 and 0 respectively. Normal Prime operators, (+,-) are replaced by conjuctions, denoted as ∧ and ∨.

Rockefeller Differential Analyzer (1942) Electronic version of the Differential Analyzer. Used over 200 miles of wire.
Claude Shannon (1916 - 2001) Born in Petoskey, MI. He created the first digital circuit.
Alan Turing (1912 - 1954) Born in Maida Vale, London, England. Created what many called the first general purpose computer.
Konrad Zuse (1910 - 1995) Born in Berlin, Germany Created the first programmable computer
John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry (1903 - 1995) (1918 - 1963) John A. - Born in Hamilton, NY. Invented the first electronic digital computer. Clifford Berry - Born on Gladbrook, IA. Helped create the digital computer.

Harvard Mark 1 (1944) Was a general purpose electromechanical computer. Build from switches, relays, rotary shafts, and clutches. Could exucute long computations automatically.
