1 août 416 av. J.-C. - Siege of Melos
Description:
In the summer of 416 BCE, the Athenian government sent 34,000 soldiers to Melos in an attempt to invade the island, around 3,000 of which were heavy infantry soldiers from the armies of Athens and its allies. This was because Melos had refused an alliance with Athens and remained neutral in the Peloponnesian war, and it was instrumental in the Athenian army's dominance over the Aegean Sea. Athens forced Melos to surrender to their rule in the winter of the same year, killing all of the men on the island, and enslaving the women and children. An Athenian colony of 500 was later established on the island.
