Description:
During the French Revolution, Maximillien Robbespierre and the radical Jacobin party emerged. They sought to eliminate the influence of the Roman Catholic Church by promoting a "Cult of Reason" and reorganizing the Christian calendar. They also granted increase rights to women. During the Reign of Terror, over 300,000 people suspected of plotting against the revolution were imprisoned and 40,000 were sentenced to the guillotine. In 1794, the convention arrested Robbespierre and his allies, charged them with tyranny and executed them.
