The Declaration of Independence remains to be the starting point for the American Identity. This document is what declared the colonies separation from England. It not only claimed out independence, but also outlines inherent individual rights. The line "We must endeavor to forget our former love for them, and hold them as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends"(Jefferson, 327). This shows that even though separating from England may. be a scary thought, but it was the best option for the improvement and creation of the American identity.
