1 mars 1639 - Dutch Learning
Description:
After 1639, Dutch merchants at the port of Nagasaki became Japan's source of information in the outside world due to their strict policy of isolationism. Japanese scholars learned Dutch to communicate with foreigners. After 1720, Tokugawa authorities lifted the ban on foreign books and scholars were able to translate Dutch medicinal and scientific treasuries into Japanese enabling them to make more accurate textbooks.
