Description:

A battle that took place at Thermopylae, a mountain pass in Northern Greece. The battle was followed Persian attempts to invade Greek cities, with the Greek forces led by Spartan King Leonidas (with approximately 7,000 men) going against the army of the Persian King Xerxes I (with 70,000 to 300,000 men). Greek forces were able to hold their own against the Persian army despite the inequality in numbers until a Greek citizen, Ephialtes, betrayed a path that went around Thermopylae to the Persian forces. This made the Greek army extremely vulnerable and resulted in their loss of the battle.
