-violence in Kansas dominated this election
-new Republican party denounced Kansas-Nebraska Act and wanted slavery prohibited in all territories
-Republicans won many votes of Know-Nothings because of promises against foreign immigrants
-Democrats reaffirmed their support for popular sovereignty and the Kansas-Nebraska Act
-Democrats nominated Buchanan

-Republicans replaced Whigs as the second major party
-Buchanan won but failed to keep the Democratic party together
