1 juill. 1619 - Batavia (Dutch Colony on Java)

Description:

Dutch mariners conquered Indonesia and aimed to control the trade in spices in South East Asia. Jan Pieterszoon founded Batavia on Java and it served as an entrepot for the Dutch VOC. Coen planned to establish a VOC monopoly over spice production and trade by forcing Indonesian merchants to deliver spices only to the VOC. By the late 17th century, the VOC controlled most of the spice islands and ports of Java, but mostly made alliances with local rulers to main order in most regions with only Batavia and the most important spice-bearing islands being reserved for direct Dutch rule.
