1 déc. 1564 - Spanish Imperial Rule in Philippines
Description:
Spanish forces under the command of Miguel Lopez overcame authorities in Cebu and Manila because the Philippines were not able to put them a united defense due to the lack of centralized government even though the Muslim community of Mindanao did resist Spanish encroachment. Under Spanish rule, Manila soon became a bustling port city and an entrepot for the trade in silk as well as the cental for Spanish commercial activity in Asia. Chinese merchants supplied the silk goods that Spniash traders shipped to Mexico in the Manila galleons but also faced discrimination and violence. Spanish authorities also sought to spread Roman Catholicism in the Philippines and so pressured prominent filippinos to convert and opened schools to teach basic literacy and church doctrine.
