Eratosthenes, a Greek scholar who lived from around 276 to 194 B.C., made groundbreaking contributions to geography and cartography. He is best known for being the first person to calculate the Earth's circumference with remarkable accuracy using simple geometry and observations of the sun's angles in different locations. In addition to this, Eratosthenes developed one of the earliest systems of latitude and longitude, greatly enhancing the accuracy of maps. His work laid the foundations for future cartography and greatly advanced the understanding of the Earth's dimensions and geography.
