The Phoenicians, active from around 1500 to 300 B.C., were expert sailors and traders renowned for their seafaring prowess. Originating from the eastern Mediterranean region, they established a network of trade routes and colonies across the Mediterranean Sea. The Phoenicians are credited with creating some of the earliest maps and improving shipbuilding techniques, which allowed them to explore possibly as far as the Atlantic Ocean. Their maritime skills not only facilitated the spread of their alphabet and culture but also made them one of the most influential trading civilizations of their time.
