The Death of Justinian II and succeed of young Tiberius III left the Roman Empire into chaos, the throne were changed as quickly as changing clothes. During this period, Arab invasion continued.
Mu'awiya's attack continued in 656, he marching into Nikaea in early of the year, and then into Ephesos by the end of the year. However, in 657, Philippikos the Armenian led an army luckily defeating Mu'awiya near Ephesus, and driving him back from the coast. Despite the victory, Mu'awiya still taken advantage of the Roman move, and had marched south along the cost, taking Attaleia and securing the entire southern coast of Asia Minor.
