18 nov 621 - Battle of Lucca
Description:
As many of the generals wounded or killed in the Lombard War, Theodosius III finally choose Heraclius to lead the army in italy.
Heraclius overthrown the old strategy, and abandoned untenable Roman fortresses, holding only Ravenna, Rome, and the most important mountain passes. Then he went on the offensive with all of the forces he could safely bring into Italy, advanced on Lucca, adding yet more depradations to the countryside, and then finally attacking the now weakened capital. As the campaign season of 621 came to an end the city fell, and with it fell the entire duchy. The doux was captured along with his family and shipped off to Consantinople while a Roman official was put in charge and Heraclius left enough men behind to hold the citadel, and moved south.
