Tensions between Britain and the American colonies continued to rise. Britain continued implementing Taxation policies, including the Tea Act of 1773, which granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies. As a response, on December 16, 1773, a group of colonists disguised as Native Americans boarded British ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor. The British government responded by implementing the Intolerable Acts, closing Boston Harbor and imposing martial law in Massachusetts. This bold act of defiance significantly escalated the conflict between Britain and the colonies, uniting many colonists against British oppression and leading to the First Continental Congress in 1774, a critical step toward the revolutionary movement.
