8 nov 1923 - Beer Hall Putsch

Description:

Causes:
1. The Nazi Party attempting to overthrow the Weimar Republic
2. Hitler was inspired by Benito Mussolini’s successful March on Rome in 1922
3. The aim was to march on Berlin to launch a national revolution
Effects:
1. Police clashed with the march and killed sixteen of Hitlers supporters as it was a violent protest and against the law
2. Hitler snuck away when police were firing and as a result it caused a split between him and Ludendorff, another of the leaders of the putsch.
3. Hitler held a march each year on the anniversary of the putsch, taking the same route from the Bürgerbräukeller to the site where the clash happened resulting in horrific memories for some citizens.
4. Hitler was convicted of high treason and was sentenced to 5 years in prison in April 1924. He was released in December 1924. This led to Hitler writing Mein Kampf whilst behind bars.
5. Mein Kampf was a very publicized autobiography that blamed minorities, especially the Jews, for things like the loss of WW1. It was based on a theory that the Jews were the reason that Jesus died. For that reason, the Catholics, one of the largest religions in Germany at the time, didn’t like them.
6. Hitler also detailed in Mein Kampf about how the Jews owning the banks was a bad thing, during the great depression, bank loans weren’t getting paid, meaning the banks weren’t getting their money back. Leading to higher interest rates and German citizens having to pay more overall. This led to a large dislike of the Jews within German citizens.
7. Allowed Hitler to become a national well known identity, inspiring him to chose a more “legal” path for his dream of revolutionising Germany. Through manipulating the political system, gaining more votes every election until he won.
8. Hitler capitalised on the Great Depression and how the Weimar Republic were “not a strong enough government” for Germany. The Nazi party earnt more and more votes each election pushing that they would benefit Germans by getting unemployed citizens jobs and terminate the Treaty of Versailles.
