Description:

- Restrictions set by Southern states on former slaves, designed to replicate the conditions of slavery in the post-Civil War South
- Various codes prohibited meetings without a white person present, others established segregated public facilities
- Some made it illegal to not be employed under a white person and not live on a White person's property
- Allowed during Presidential Reconstruction
- Led to Radical Republican opposition and exclusion of Southern representation in Congress
- Invalidated by the 14th Amendment
