The petition had 3.3 million signatures but was rejected by parliament. It led to a wave of strikes (general strike 1842 led to mass arrests and repression) - no back up plan when the petitions failed, the outbreaks of uncoordinated strikes and violence reduced middle class support and encouraged the government to use force
