1882: The Chinese Exclusion Laws severely restricted Chinese immigration. Many
Chinese people forged certificates for entry to become derivative citizens (China-born
sons of U.S. citizens). From 1920 to 1940, 71,040 individuals entered the U.S. claiming
derivative citizenship.
