- The federal govt. had assured Cheyenne and Arapaho leaders that conflict had ended and instructed them to await a peace delegation- Colonel Chivington instead led an attack on the Cheyenne and Arapaho village, disregarding their surrender flags
- The Army killed more than 200 people in the attack, most women and children
