Key Points:
Due to short reign and ill health Emperor Yinzong’s reign was more of a transition between Emperor Renzong and Emperor Shenzong. Half of his reign was taken p in debate over the ritual differentiation of his biological and adoptive fathers. Some brief skirmishes with the Xi Xia and increasing fiscal issues were the focal point of his last two years.

-When Emperor Renzong unexpectedly died, Empress Cao called together a group to handle the succession. Many had worked on the Qingli reforms (1043-1045). Yinzong was still in mourning for his biological father (Zhao Yunrang, Grandson of Emperor Taizong). Emperor Yinzong became sick and Empress Cao acted as reagent until 1064.
-Yinzong’s wife became Empress Kao. She would become Dowager Empress and regent during Emperor Zhezong’s reign and would repeal Wang An Shi’s reforms and give Sima Guang and his group high appointments.
-Sima Guang raised the question of hot to ritually differentiate between Yinzong’s biological father (Zhao Yunrang) and adoptive father (Emperor Renzong). Yinzong eventually decided to honor his biological father as his father.
-Liao announced they were now Da Liao in 1066
-Xi Xai began attacking ~1066 but backed down after being threatened with having the tribute withheld.

• Difficulties in Tax Collection
• Excessive number of officials and excessive spending on rituals
Died in 1067 of Illness
