12 juill. 1948 - 2nd Battle of Negba
Description:
The 2nd Battle of Negba was launched on July 12. This time, the Egyptians executed diversionary attacks on surrounding positions before encircling Negba with a reinforced battalion. Despite their efforts and superior numbers, this attack too was repelled by the determined Israeli defenders.
Throughout both battles, Negba’s defenders utilized the kibbutz’s fortified perimeter and underground shelters effectively, managing to hold their ground against the better-equipped Egyptian forces. The successful defense of Negba allowed it to serve as a forward base for subsequent Israeli operations against the Egyptians, including Operation Yoav.
Negba's resistance not only foiled Egyptian plans to advance further into Israeli territory but also had significant strategic and symbolic implications. It bolstered Israeli morale and demonstrated the effectiveness of the kibbutzim as fortresses in the nascent state’s defense strategy against invading armies.
