Founded in 1939, Kibbutz Negba held a strategic location overlooking the Majdal – Bayt Jibrin road, making it a key target for Egyptian assaults due to its potential to control major supply routes.

The first major attack occurred on June 2, 1948, when Egyptian forces, comprising a battalion reinforced with armor, artillery, and aircraft, attempted to overrun Negba. However, the kibbutz's 140 defenders, supported by motorized Negev Brigade forces, successfully repelled the assault.
