in 1905 the first cinema was opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and it was called the Nickelodeon. It was called this because it cost a Nickel to go and see a film. And the word Odeon was a type of amphitheatre in ancient Greece and later meant cinema. Soon Nickelodeons were becoming more popular and by 1907 around 2 million americans had been to a nickelodeon. This was the main way to watch film until 1910 when were replaced by modern cinemas. Nickelodeons had a massive impact on film as it made watching films easily accessible and meant the film industry in terms of money began to grow. The concept of going to a theatre and watching a film is still around today and nickelodeons where the start of that.
