5 mars 1770 - Death of Crispus Attucks during American Revolution

Description:

The freedom that was fought for during the American Revolution only applied to white people (mostly), but Black people hoped for some benefits for themselves as well. Therefore, out of 200.000 people that served the American army in the Revolutionary war, 5.000-8.000 were of African descent (some were forced, others willingly as to show good will). Furthermore, 20.000 Black men fought for the British army as they thought the British seemed more likely to establish emancipation in case of their victory. Crispus Attucks is believed to be first man to be killed as part of the American Revolution in 1770. He was a Black man and formerly enslaved. He was killed during the Boston Massacre on the open street although being (presumably) unarmed. He later on became symbol of Black patriotism and sacrifice.
