The Purchase of Alaska was completed in 1867 when the United States acquired the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, a transaction negotiated by Secretary of State William H. Seward. Often referred to as "Seward's Folly" due to widespread skepticism about its value, the acquisition added over 586,000 square miles of new territory to the United States, which later proved to be rich in resources.
