The Republican Party was founded in 1854 in Ripon, Wisconsin, by anti-slavery activists, modernizers, ex-Whigs, and ex-Free Soilers, responding to the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed for the potential expansion of slavery into the territories. The party quickly grew into a national force dedicated to the principles of preserving the Union and stopping the spread of slavery, which it viewed as contrary to the ideals of a free society.
