18 oct. 1526 - Signs of resistance - San Miguel Slave Rebellion

Description:

Lucas Vazquez de Ayllón died and the leadership was passed on to Captain Francisco Gomez, whose plan was to stay at the settlement. Different faction leader Gines Doncel and his lieutenant Pedro de Bazan wanted to leave the settlement and return home. The disagreement led to Gomez being arrested in Doncel´s home.
Doncel´s home, where Gomez was locked up was set on fire by the enslaved Africans, who also freed Gomez and other captives.
The enslaved Africans escaped to live with the local Native Americans.
This incident is seen as the first slave rebellion on the mainland of North America.
