In 1951, Men's weekly wages were £8.30. In 1961, Men's weekly wages were £15.35.
This increase in wages have people more money to spend on non-essentials. Combined with the introduction of Hire Purchase and the introduction of washing machines and refrigerators giving people more free time, people started to develop hobbies such as gardening.

Holidays were also becoming popular. 60,000 people holidayed to Butlins each week. This was helped with the increased ownership of cars.
