Economic growth and low employment meant that wages could be increased and most people enjoyed a mass increase in income.
In the run up to the 1955 election, R.A.Butler gave the middle class a 'give-away' budget which cut taxes by £134 million.
Britain had a higher income per head than any other major country exluding the USA.
