Description:

Potidea - a city with Corinthian influence (as a colony) & Corinthian magistrates was paying tribute to Athens at the time.

It was known that Corinth & Athens saw each other as rivals & so Corinth ever since the battle of Sybota, were trying to retaliate against the Athenian through any means and so was openly hostile.

Athens, in fear of Macedonian (Perdicas) & Corinthian influences of constructing a revolt in Potidea - which if allowed to happen assumed to act as a domino effect of revolts amongst other athenian allied cities in Thrace.

Athens demanded that Potidea to tear down their walls, remove & deny any further Corinthian magistrates, & grant hostages to Athens as assurances of 'friendship'. (Potidean response is negative)
