America continued tests in the Pacific. ‘Operation Shrimp’ went wrong. Radioactive dust spread much further than expected - Japanese fishermen 80 miles away were affected. All 23 crew fell ill. One died. A strong worldwide reaction against the testing followed, and the irony of victims being Japanese was not lost on the public.
