the first soviet atomic bomb was detonated, ending the US ‘atomic monopoly’. Although behind the Americans (the USA had built nearly 100 bombs), Russia was determined to catch up, despite the huge strains on their economy. The speed at which they did so surprised the USA. The explanation? Some U.S. scientists believed an American monopoly on the technology was wrong, so they leaked information to the Russians. Soviet infiltration of the Manhattan project gave them access to very useful drawings, but it was still a feat for their engineers to actually build the bomb.​
