1 févr. 1749 - bow street runners

Description:

The Bow Street Runners were the first group of law enforcement officers appointed to the Bow Street Magistrates' Court in Westminster, London. Established by magistrate Henry Fielding in 1749, the force initially comprised only six men. Fielding's brother, John, who succeeded him as the magistrate, transformed these constables into a skilled and efficient team. Although the public referred to them as the Bow Street Runners, the officers themselves did not use this term and considered it offensive. Henry Fielding was also a well-known author.
