Economic problems made Macmillan seem out of touch. This political pressure resulted in him losing trust with some of his cabinet ministers-leading to what would be known as the 'Night of the Long Knives'.

This was a radical reshuffling of his cabinet, sacking a third of it. The goal was to rejuvenate the government but it actually weakened it with the public being shocked by the reshuffle. Macmillion became the face of a wave of satire in theatres and television.
