1 août 480 av. J.-C. - Battle of Thermopylae

Description:

August 480 BCE: The Persian army, led by King Xerxes I, arrives at Thermopylae, a narrow pass in central Greece. The Greeks, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, along with a small force of Greek allies, including Thespians and Thebans, prepare to defend the pass against the Persian advance.

August 480 BCE (August 18th–20th): The Persian army clashes with the Greek forces at Thermopylae. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Greeks, with their superior defensive position, manage to hold off the Persian advance for several days.

August 480 BCE (August 21st–22nd): The Persians, under the guidance of a local Greek traitor named Ephialtes, discover a mountain path that allows them to outflank the Greek position at Thermopylae.

August 480 BCE (August 22nd–23rd): Realizing that they are about to be surrounded, King Leonidas dismisses the majority of the Greek forces, insisting that the Spartans would stay behind to fight to the death. The remaining Spartans, along with a few other Greek allies who chose to stay, engage in a heroic last stand against the Persians.

August 480 BCE (August 23rd): The final day of the battle sees the remaining Greek forces, including King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors, being overwhelmed by the Persian army. Leonidas and his men fight bravely but are ultimately killed in battle.

The Battle of Thermopylae was a significant engagement in the Greco-Persian Wars, symbolizing the Greek city-states' determination and willingness to resist the Persian invasion. The sacrifice of King Leonidas and his men became legendary and has been celebrated throughout history.
