1 janv. 701 av. J.-C. - Siege of Azekah

Description:

The Siege of Azekah was a pivotal battle in Sennacherib's campaign in Judah, marking the first major clash between the Neo-Assyrian Empire and the Kingdom of Judah. Occurring around 701 BCE, it preceded the Siege of Lachish and is detailed in the Azekah Inscription, though not mentioned in the Hebrew Bible.

Sennacherib, aiming to reassert control over rebelling kingdoms, including Judah under King Hezekiah, targeted Azekah, a strategically important walled settlement on a hill.

The Assyrian army, a formidable force comprising infantry, cavalry, and chariots, faced off against the smaller and less organized Jewish army, mainly consisting of local militias and mercenaries.

Using battering rams, the Assyrians breached Azekah's walls, leading to intense close combat with the defenders. Cavalry charges further disorganized the Jewish forces, resulting in the city's looting and destruction by the Assyrians.

Following the fall of Azekah, Sennacherib continued his campaign into Judah, ultimately culminating in the Siege of Lachish.
