1 janv. 1945 - Ideology

Description:

Background info:
- The Cold War was not a real war, it symbolizes continuous tension between the US and the USSR that occurred shortly after WW2. The Cold War happened between 1947 to 1991.

Why did the Cold War Start?
- The US and the USSR had quite literally opposite ideologies, and even though they fought alongside each other in WW2 to defeat Germany, they still had tension.

- USSR: Communist, a 1 party dictatorship (elections were held but all candidates belonged to the communist party), unemployment was rare, low amounts of poverty, rights of individuals were seen as less important so their lives were very controlled, communists believed they should spread communism worldwide, everyone shared everything

- USA: Capitalist, a democracy with free elections, the world's wealthiest country but had a lot of poverty due to some people being extremely rich and some being extremely poor, being free was more important than everyone being equal, people in the US saw communist spread as a revolution, everyone fend for themselves.

How did these ideologies cause tension?

- US: communism threatened the Western way of life, dislike of Stalin's dictatorship which caused many deaths in the 1930s, and the signing of the Nazi-Soviet pact which invaded Poland.

- USSR: communists believed capitalism meant that the rich lived off the poor, the US had helped the whites fight off communism in a Russian civil war, and in 1919 the Allies had given away Russian land (eg Poland), making the USSR angry
