1 janv. 1938 - Anschluss with Austria (HFP)

Description:

After his successes in 1936, Hitler decided it was time to join Austria with Germany, as a part of his foreign policy. He believed the 2 nations should join as one, and many people in Austria believed so too. In 1934, Hitler had tried to take over Austria but was stopped by Mussolini, however, now Germany and Italy were allies, so this would be much easier.

There was a strong Nazi party within Austria, Hitler told the party to create trouble within Austria and demanded a union with Germany. When this started happening, Hitler then told the Austrian chancellor that only Anschluss (a political union ) would solve this. The Austrian chancellor asked Britain and France for help, but they failed to provide any support, so a plebiscite was held. Hitler was not ready for that, he could lose! Hitler then decided to send in troops to ensure a trouble-free plebiscite. Under the eyes of the Nazi troops, Hitler won by 99.75%.

Anschluss was completed without any military confrontation between France and Britain, chamberlain felt that the Austrians had the right to choose, making it wrong for the TOV to separate the 2 nations.

Once again, Hitler won and now had Austrian soldiers, weapons, and rich deposits of gold and iron. Hitler was breaking another term of the TOV and now saw that France and Britain were not prepared for another war.

What did Hitler gain from Anschluss?

- Hitler became economically stronger
- Hitler became militarily stronger
- Hitler broke more terms of the TOV and increased living space (HFP)
