1 janv. 2004 - International attention increases towards the conflict as the army moves to stop the uprising in western Darfur. Pro-government militias begin systemic killings. The Sudan government agrees with the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) on a ceasefire, although the UN Reports that Sudan has not met targets for disarming pro-government militias. The United States calls the situation a genocide.
