2 janv. 1941 - Adorno - Popular vs. Serious
Description:
Adorno distinguished the two types of music however he only defined "serious" music by what it is not
"popular" music is characterized by standardization --> adherence to simple, stereotyped musical patters, forms of songs are "frozen" by the market, pseudo-individuation (adding runs and accidentals to mask underlying conformity to a standard model)
CRITIQUES
- biased towards eurocentric classical tradition (which also contains standardization)
- neglects social, historical and geographic contexts of music focusing only on structure
- fails to consider that "popular" music can be disruptive and act as opposition to established systems
- doesn't recognize possibility of active listeners (constructing musical meaning for themselves)
