A deliberate assembly calld by Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire; convened the diet in order to figure out what they would do with Luther; a response to the works that Luther had published that caused people to question the reliability of papal interpretation of Scripture; Luther expected to their explain his perceived heresy or recant and return power back to the Catholic Church;; didn't do it;further fanned the flame of the Protestant Reformation; religious and state authorities were clashing in significant ways, sparking the Protestant Reformation; key concept: the struggle for sovereignty within and among states resulted in varying degrees of political centralization
