21 janv. 1793 - Louis XVI is executed at the guillotine

Description:

The Constitution of 1791 and its stances were too moderate for some powerful figures, such as Robespierre and Danton, who called for a more republican government and the end of tyranny. The king and royal family were forced to flee the palace after a revolutionary crowd attacked them and took shelter with the Legislative Assembly, who imprisoned the king and suspended his powers. The new representative body, the National Convention, replaced the Legislative Assembly and put Louis XVI on trial for treason. He was convicted and the more radical members of the Convention called for his execution. They won the majority and Louis XVI was executed by guillotine. After Louis XVI was executed, the war on tyranny continued and many more powerful figures and nobles were sent to the guillotine during the Reign of Terror.
