1 janv. 1786 - Excessive spending and poor harvests lead to a financial crisis in France

Description:

Excessive spending on foreign wars, among other things, led France to the brink of bankruptcy. Poor harvests also impacted the internal economy of France. The excessive spending of the French government caused them to have to heavily tax the people of France. This, combined with poor grain harvests, led to devastating economic hardship for the French lower classes. The people believed that they should have fair prices for food and steady employment. This unrest and dissatisfaction led to revolutionary thoughts in the minds of the people, especially the poor urban classes in Paris. They took matters into their own hands when they stormed the Bastille to retrieve weapons to defend Paris. This unrest and dissatisfaction also led to the Great Fear in the French countryside as the rural lower classes felt the effects as well.
