26 oct. 1795 - The Directory is installed
Description:
The Directory replaced the Committee of Public Safety when members of the National Convention, fearing they might be next in the Reign of Terror, sent its leader, Robespierre, to the guillotine. When the national Convention wrote a new constitution, it granted executive power to the Directory, made up of 5 men, to avoid the dominance of another one man, such as Robespierre. However, the Directory was rife with corruption and ineffectiveness, and the French people grew frustrated with it. The Directory's ineffectiveness and unpopularity led to Napoleon's coup d'etat, where he overthrew the Directory and assumed power himself.
