1 janv. 1860 - Neurasthenia (1860s)

Description:

A term first introduced by George Miller Beard in the 1860s and was used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to describe a medical condition characterized by a range of symptoms, including fatigue, nervousness, irritability, and various functional disturbances. Beard considered the cause of Neurasthenia to be the fast-paced and stressful nature of modern industrialized society leading to nervous exhaustion. He argued that the demands of modern life, such as the rapid pace of technological and social change, were overwhelming the nervous system. This concept contributed to the recognition of the impact of stress, lifestyle, and environmental factors on mental well-being (VanMattson, 2023, Lecure 6).
