1 janv. 1861 - Greenbacks
Description:
Congress failed to sell enough bonds to finance the Civil War for the North, so they printed $60 million in paper currency for the first time to pay for it. This was declared the legal tender, and they were legally required to be accepted despite their non gold/silver backing. They were called Greenbacks to be distinguished from state currency's black backs. These later became the national currency.
