The story of a factory that creates thousands of artificial humanoids is told in the drama Rossum's Universal Robots," created by Czech novelist Karel Čapek. They are able to cut the cost of creating weaving material by 80% since they work so hard and so cheaply. Čapek dubbed the devices "robots," a pun on the Czech word robota, which refers to forced work performed by serfs. The drama gave robots their current name and heightened the existential fear that humans would one day be replaced by robots, since Čapek's robots finally rise up and massacre humans.
